Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) allows health care providers across the province to digitally view, manage, share and store images and related medical reports on a secure computer system from any location, regardless of where the test was performed. PACS has replaced the use of film for diagnostic services such as x-rays, ultrasounds, computed tomography (CT) and mammography. Today, more than 99% of imaging in Newfoundland and Labrador hospitals is now digital.
  • Benefits

    The PACS program has resulted in increased productivity and improved efficiency within our healthcare system with a significant reduction in repeated exams and patient transfers. It has improved care by providing patients in remote sites more timely access to radiologists and specialists regardless of where they live.
  • Progress/Status

    PACS is available at all sites who deliver Diagnostic Imaging (DI) services in this province. The PACS repository is one of the most comprehensive provincial DI repositories in the country and contains approximately 8.8 million exams with 324 million associated images.
